BA + MA Preaching and Pastoral Program Stages

The B.A. + M.A. in Preaching and Pastoral Ministry is a unique program that allows you to prepare for Christian ministry by completing your bachelor's degree and master's degree in just five years. During the course of the five years, you will be trained in Bible, theology, ministry skills and preaching, and you will grow personally as you interact with experienced pastors and professors.

The B.A. + M.A. in Preaching and Pastoral Ministry has three stages:

  1. Sophomore and Junior year: Preaching and Pastoral Ministry concentration in the B.A. in Biblical and Theological Studies degree. You can start this program in your sophomore year after applying at the end of your freshman year. Some students may be allowed to begin in their junior year. The concentration requires involvement in co-curricular activities that will help shape your spiritual life and your ministry.
  2. Senior year: take both B.A. and M.A. classes. If you successfully complete the requirements of the concentration in the sophomore and junior year, then you begin taking seminary classes in your senior year. This requires a successful application to the graduate program at the end of the junior year. At the end of your senior year, you can earn your B.A., and you will be well on the way toward your M.A. in Preaching and Pastoral Ministry.
  3. Fifth year: complete the M.A. in Preaching and Pastoral Ministry. During the fifth year, you complete the requirements for the Preaching and Pastoral Ministry concentration in the M.A. in Christian Ministry and Leadership.

How to apply to the concentration in Preaching and Pastoral Ministry

Entry into this concentration requires the following:

  • Contact Megan Bergk at megan.bergk@biola.edu anytime during their freshman or sophomore year and request an application.
  • Earn an overall GPA of 3.0, and grades of B or higher in any classes taken so far that will be used as advanced standing for the MA: BBST 103, 105, 109, 110, 251, 254, 312, 413; two BBST 300/400 electives; BLGR 101, 102, 201, 202. (Failure to get an A or a B in one of these classes will result in the student not receiving advanced standing for that class upon entry into the M.A.)
  • Be involved in some form of Christian service and have a sense of call or desire to pursue ministry.

The senior year of this concentration includes both graduate and undergraduate courses. In order to begin the senior year portion of the concentration, students must complete the following:

(Failure to get an A or a B in one of these classes will result in the student not receiving advanced standing for that class upon entry into the M.A.)
  • Apply and be admitted to Talbot's M.A. in Preaching and Pastoral Ministry program. One of the required letters of recommendation must come from the director of the Preaching and Pastoral Ministry program.

Students who are not admitted into the senior year portion of the BA PPM may return to the normal BA in Biblical and Theological Studies, and no credits will be lost or wasted.
