Current Student Resources

From scholarships and loans to clinic templates to professional associations, explore the resources available to our current students for their academic and professional growth.

Loans

The Helen Grace Colbert Yates Loan Program

Helen Grace Colbert Yates was a woman who believed in the field of Speech-Language Pathology. She demonstrated this by leaving a sum of money to be distributed as no-interest loans to students studying this field. Loans are approximately $1000-2500 per school year & can be re-applied for each year. This loan may only be used for tuition, books and lab fees and may not be used for room, board or travel expenses and may not be disbursed as cash to the student. Biola’s financial aid office will coordinate this loan with other loans the student is receiving to ensure compliance with federal rules.

If interested in the loan, use our application form to apply.

Internships & Volunteering

SLPA License

Students who are pursuing a BS in Communication Disorders may also obtain a SLPA (Speech-Language Pathologist Assistant) license. In order for that to happen, students must do a SLPA internship at a clinic or school of their choice under a licensed SLP who has their CCC's and at least two years of professional SLP experience. Students who are thinking of doing a SLPA internship should start preparing at least one semester in advance. Below are some resources you will need if you intend to pursue this license.

Internships

Students are encouraged to seek out internships with local SLPs and Audiologists to help gain knowledge and valuable experience in the field. If students require an extra elective unit to graduate, they have to option to do CODS440 Communication Disorders Internship as an arranged course. Students should talk to the administrative coordinator, Alicia McCormick, for more information.

Teacher Assistant (TA) Positions

The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders hires teacher assistants (TA) each school year to assist professors in grading and research. TAs are typically juniors and seniors, but lower classmen will be considered. If interested, please use our application form to apply. Deadline is May 1.

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteering is a great way to gain experience related to the fields of speech-language pathology and audiology. Many students seek out volunteer experiences on their own or join along with the Biola NSSLHA chapter. Below is a list of some of the organizations and events where Biola students have done volunteer work.

Biola NSSLHA Chapter

Club verse: 1 Peter 4:11 - If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.

About NSSLHA

Founded in 1972, NSSLHA is the national organization for graduate and undergraduate students interested in the study of normal and disordered human communication. NSSLHA is the only official national student association recognized by the American Speech Language Hearing Association (ASHA).

NSSLHA has approximately 13,000 members with chapters at more than 300 colleges & universities. NSSLHA membership is available to any part- or full-time, graduate or undergraduate student interested in the study of communication disorders.

Students pursuing academic study as speech-language pathology assistants, students pursuing a doctorate of philosophy or doctorate of audiology, as well as students enrolled in a communication sciences and disorders (CSD) program outside of the United States can be members of National NSSLHA.

If you have additional questions about our organization, you may contact the National Office at any time.

Biola Chapter

Along with the national association, we have a Biola NSSLHA Chapter which aims at growing, connecting, and encouraging Biola communication science and disorders majors. NSSLHA is a wonderful way to get to know others within the major, as well as make an impact in the community. We would love for you to join and get involved.

  • We are supported through Biola's student government.
  • Our purpose is to provide a place for the students in our major to interact outside of class in a social setting, to encourage one another and serve in the community.
  • Our main events include monthly get-togethers such as BBQ’s, movie nights, a Christmas party, service projects, and the end of the year semi-formal dinner.
