Commuter Advisor

Commute Advisors serve and provide a connection for undergraduate commuter students to community, information, and resources at Biola. They oversee general Collegium functions and developing programming to promote commuter student sense of belonging at Biola. We’re looking for team members who value who are humble, teachable, integrating their faith, create equitable and inclusive spaces, pursue holistic wellness, work collaboratively, and have the heart to grow as a leader.

Job Description


General Responsibilities

  • Commuter Advisors (CA) create programs, events, and services that connect all commuter students to community, information, and resources at Biola.
  • CA plan and host events and services that serve the all commuter students populations, which include subpopulations such as Transfer Students, Veterans, and First Gen, and students who have never lived on campus
  • CA on Shift in the Collegium:
    • Attend to the Collegium reception area, welcoming members and registering new members and guests
    • Maintain Collegium facilities (clean, orderly, and hospitable); Stocking Honor Bar, cleaning kitchen area, and resources are kept in good order
    • Function as peer advisor—listening and connecting commuter students to resources on campus and in the Collegium
    • Maintain a positive and healthy Collegium environment—promoting the growth of the community and encourage members to get connected with community, information, and resources
    • Facilitating Collegium environment to ensure the space is a shared placed for all commuter to feel welcomed
    • Provide assistance to commuter students by helping them connect to information and resources available for Biola students.
  • CA commit to a posture of humility and teachability in their spiritual and leadership development.
  • CA take responsibility for their areas of specialization and other areas as assigned by the Director and Assistant Director. Prompt and excellent follow-through is highly valued.
  • CA supervise Collegium Teams: that consists of 3-5 Collegium Staff members.
    • Able to train, develop, and coach new staff members
  • CA cultivate a discipline of learning to integrate their faith holistically in their lives

Commuter Advisors Specializations


General Requirements and Qualifications

Must be a Biola Commuter Student (Student who does not live in Biola-owned housing and apartments)

  • Pre-Semester Required Trainings and Fall SOS 
    • Every Commuter Life staff must complete online canvas training modules 
    • Must attend Fall Commuter Advisor Training 
    • Must attend Fall All Staff Retreat 
    • Must attend Fall All Staff Trainings 
    • Must attend Fall SOS
    • Please note weekend work and church responsibilities

  • Weekly Shifts Begin on the first day of classes
  • Required Weekly Commuter Advisors Strategic Meeting
    • Every Wednesday 5-7 pm
  • Schedule: Work 6-12 hours/week
    • Includes weekly staff meetings, 1x1 meetings with supervisor, occasional day or evening events, supervision of a Collegium Team, and staff professional development.
  • Monthly All Staff Meetings: 1x/month with CA and CS
  • Collegium Team check-ins: 1x/month
  • Time Availability
    • Final selection will be partially determined by availability for vacant shifts and availability for the staff meeting. So please give us the widest range of availability that you are able to.
    • Due to the importance of servicing the community well, priority is given to applicants who are able to cover morning and evening shifts in the Collegium.
    • Please note that during the first few weeks of employment, you will work extra hours due to training, pre-semester prep, Fall SOS, and the beginning of the semester events.
  • GPA: Minimum Cumulative GPA of 2.0
  • Qualities
    • A self-initiating person, detail oriented, organized and able to work independently with minimal supervision. Strong team, interpersonal, and collaborative skills, and a posture to learn and develop in leadership
    • Timely and professional online communication and competence is important. An eye for customer service, a heart for people, a strong work ethic, and good interpersonal communication abilities are essential
